H Beam gets name due to it’s alphabet ‘H’ shaped structure and is very strong and durable. It can take more load than any other structure. It has a thicker center compared to I beam. It can be built to any size or length.

H BEAMS Description
The flanges are welded to the web to form the H-section. H-beams are also called wide flange beams.
H-beams have greater web thickness compared to I-beams. This increased thickness gives strength to H-beams.
H-beams are used for spans of up to 330 feet that can be built up to any size and height.
H beams have longer, wider and heavier flanges than I beams, but both terms H beam and I beam can be used interchangeably most of the time and are commonly called laminated steel beams (RSJ)
